The guayaba
As we have seen in the previous article, many times as a source of vitamin C we choose orange, but it is the fruit that has less vitamin C, 60 mg per 100g of edible portion, compared to 184 mg of guayaba
Thanks to the diversity we have, we can find these tropical fruits in any market, being much more accessible to the consumer.
Guava is the fruit of the guava tree, a tree of the Myrtaceae family. It is a fruit with many properties, the pulp contains very few proteins and carbohydrates, but it is very rich in vitamin C, it also contains organic acids such as citric acid and malic acid, which helps in the absorption of vitamin C.
Contains carotenoids, you know from another of our articles that it is a substance that is transformed into vitamin A, and that it is a great antioxidant, it is interesting the amount of vitamin a in guava, since it has 79 μR, this means that 100g of pulp provides 8% of the daily needs of vitamin A. An interesting detail is that it also contains lycopene, which we have also discussed in one of our previous articles.
Guava contains vegetable fiber, soluble type, composed of pectin and mucilage, which is easy to digest.
We find that it also contains significant amounts of B vitamins, with the exception of B12.
It also contains vitamin E and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron, although the mineral that contains most is potassium. It is rich in trace elements such as zinc, copper and manganese.
It is fabulous to take it for pathologies such as hypertension, for excess cholesterol, atherosclerosis, for smoking, since tobacco consumes large amounts of vitamin C or also helps us if we stop smoking, as a detoxifier.
It is a great tonifier, therefore in states of physical fatigue it is a good option to consume guayaba
We can consume the whole fruit or also in smoothie or jellies. There is a typical Brazilian product called goiabada, it is a sweet that is made with the pulp of the guava and sugar is added, it is very similar to the quince, this kind of sweet is not good to abuse because of its high glycemic content, but a whim from time to time does not hurt
